Most hard cases, also known as hard shell guitar cases, are built from either ABS plastic or plywood. ABS cases are lightweight and absorb impact effectively, protecting the guitar inside even if the shell takes damage, which makes them ideal for regular transport. Plywood cases are heavier but offer superior structural strength and crush resistance for demanding touring conditions.

Can I fly with a guitar in a hard case?
A hard case is the minimum protection for checked-in air travel, and plywood construction, the same build used in guitar flight cases, is the safer pick for rough baggage handling. Loosen the strings slightly and pad any gaps around the headstock so the guitar cannot move inside the case.
