Bass Strings

Made for the electric bass guitar, bass strings come in two main types - roundwound and flatwound. Roundwound strings are suited to rock music and have a brighter tone that cuts through a mix easier, compared to flatwound that have a more mellow and smooth sound which are better suited to country, soul and jazz. When selecting the right set of strings, take time to consider the scale length of your instrument, the number of strings, your playing style and music genre.

Typical bass guitars have 4-strings though 5-string and 6-string varirties are common. Standard bass strings fit the "long scale" (34”) bass guitars, and shorter 5/8 scale instruments. String gauges can range from .040 up to .130 for a low-B string on a 5-string bass.

Ernie Ball is a leading brand in bass strings and uses materials including high quality nickel, stainless steel, chrome plated steel, cobalt, and copper to manufacture their extensive range of bass guitar strings. Many famous musicans  have used their strings over the years including Paul McCartney,Tony Levin, Mark Hoppus and Dave La Rue.
