About 19 Inch Racks
The 19 inch rack is the universal mounting standard for professional gear across the audio, AV, IT and broadcast industries. Equipment height is measured in rack units (1U = 1.75 inches), so gear from different industries slots into the same frame: your power amp and your network router can share one rack. That shared standard makes it easy to build a tidy studio rack that grows with your setup.
Our 19 inch audio racks include SWAMP rack stands and frames suited to studio desks, live rigs and venue installations. Fit them out with rack accessories such as drawers, shelves, blanking panels, powerboards and patch panels, then fill the remaining spaces with rack processors like graphic equalisers and compressors. Taking your gear on the road? Rugged rack cases in our road cases range protect 19 inch gear in transit.
19 Inch Rack FAQs
What is a rack unit (1U)?
A rack unit, written as 1U or 1RU, is 1.75 inches (44.45mm) of vertical rack space. Rack gear is sized in multiples of this unit, so a 2U compressor takes two units of space in any standard 19 inch rack.
Why are audio racks 19 inches wide?
The 19 inch (482.6mm) measurement refers to the width of the equipment's front panel, including its mounting ears, and the standard is shared across the audio, IT, AV and broadcast industries. Any 19 inch rack gear will bolt into any standard 19 inch frame, case or cabinet.
What is the difference between a studio rack and a rack case?
A studio rack is a fixed frame or stand designed to stay put in a studio or venue install, while a rack case is a portable enclosure with removable lids that protects the same 19 inch gear in transit. If your rig travels, choose a rack case from our road cases range.
