About Acoustic Guitar Pickups

An acoustic guitar pickup lets you plug your acoustic straight into an amplifier, PA system or audio interface without relying on a microphone. The range covers the three main designs: magnetic soundhole pickups that mount across the soundhole, piezo pickups that sense vibration through the saddle or body, and internal microphones that capture the natural acoustic character of the instrument.

Magnetic soundhole pickups suit steel string guitars and deliver a warm, feedback-resistant signal, with many models clipping in and out in seconds. Piezo designs pick up string and body vibration directly, so they also work on nylon string classical guitars. If you would rather start with a pickup built in, browse our acoustic electric guitars. Acoustic Guitar Pickup FAQs

What is the difference between a soundhole pickup and a piezo pickup?

A soundhole pickup uses a magnetic coil to sense the vibration of steel strings, giving a warm, even tone similar to an electric guitar pickup. A piezo pickup senses physical vibration through the saddle or body, producing a brighter, more percussive sound that also works on nylon string guitars.

Can I fit an acoustic guitar pickup without modifying my guitar?

In many cases, yes. Most soundhole pickups clip into place with the cable run out of the soundhole, and stick-on piezo transducers attach to the guitar body. Permanent installs, such as an endpin jack or under-saddle piezo, are best handled by a guitar technician.

Do acoustic guitar pickups need a battery?

Passive pickups plug straight in with no power required. Active pickups include a small preamp, usually battery powered, which boosts the signal and often adds volume and tone controls for easier mixing on stage.
