What does a boost pedal do?
A boost pedal increases the strength of your guitar signal before it reaches the amp. Used lightly it lifts your volume for solos, and pushed harder it drives the front end of a valve amp into smooth, natural-sounding overdrive.
What is the difference between a clean boost and an overdrive pedal?
A clean boost raises your signal level without adding distortion or colour of its own, while an overdrive clips the signal to create crunch. Running a clean boost into an already driven amp gives you more saturation without changing your core tone.
Where should a boost pedal go in the signal chain?
Both positions work, they just do different jobs. Placed before your drive pedals a boost adds gain and saturation, while placed after them it acts as a volume lift for solos. Try both and pick the sound you prefer.
