About Reflection Filters

A reflection filter, also known as a microphone isolation shield, is a curved absorber that mounts behind your microphone and soaks up room reflections before they bounce back into the capsule. In rooms that were never designed for recording, it makes an immediate difference, keeping your vocal takes dry and true to the source and reducing bleed from other instruments nearby. That is why reflection filters have become the go-to tool for home recording, voiceover and podcast work.

The range runs from full-size stand-mounted filters like the SWAMP SI05, available on its own or packaged with a heavy duty stand, through to the iSK RF-5 and the large RF-9 isolation baffle for stage or studio, plus Alctron desktop screens in a choice of colours for sit-down recording. Pair one with a condenser microphone and a pop filter for a complete vocal chain, and see our acoustic treatment range and acoustic panels for treating the room itself.

Reflection Filter FAQs

Is a reflection filter the same as a vocal booth?

A reflection filter is often called a portable vocal booth, and for good reason. A true vocal booth is a fully treated room, while a reflection filter wraps absorption around the microphone itself. It delivers much of the benefit of a booth for a fraction of the cost and space, and you can fold it away after the session.

Do reflection filters actually work?

Yes. A reflection filter absorbs sound arriving at the sensitive front and sides of the microphone, which noticeably reduces the boxy room tone in untreated spaces. For best results combine one with some basic room treatment and keep the mic away from hard, parallel walls.

Do I need a special stand for a reflection filter?

Full-size reflection filters add real weight to a stand, so a heavy duty microphone stand is strongly recommended. We offer filter and stand combo packs for exactly this reason. Desktop models simply sit on your desk or table, no stand required.
