USB-C, also written USB Type C, is the reversible connector now standard on laptops, phones, tablets and much of the current generation of audio gear. Audio interfaces, MIDI controllers and portable recorders increasingly connect over USB-C, and the cable matters: leads built to the USB 3.1 specification carry data at up to 10Gbps and deliver up to 100 watts of power, which also makes them fast USB-C charging cables for phones and laptops.

Are all USB-C cables the same?
No. Every USB-C cable shares the same reversible plug, but performance varies with the specification the cable is built to. Leads made to USB 3.1 carry data at up to 10Gbps and deliver up to 100 watts of power, while basic charge leads are slower, so check the rated specification before buying.
Which USB-C cable do I need for my audio interface or controller?
Check the socket on the device. If it has a USB-C port, a USB C to C lead connects it straight to a modern laptop, while a USB A to C lead suits computers with older USB A ports. Interfaces with the square USB B socket need a standard USB cable instead.
Are Thunderbolt and USB-C cables interchangeable?
They share the same plug, and a Thunderbolt 3 cable will work as a USB-C cable. The reverse is not always true: devices that require Thunderbolt speeds of up to 40Gbps need a certified Thunderbolt cable, not a standard USB-C lead.
