Ethernet connectors terminate the cables used in computer networking, from local area networks (LANs) through to the ethernet-based digital audio systems now common in live production. The technical name for the connector is the 8P8C modular connector, though nearly everyone knows it as the RJ45 connector or RJ45 plug.

Are RJ45 and ethernet connectors the same thing?
Yes. RJ45 is the everyday name for the 8P8C modular connector fitted to ethernet network cable, so an RJ45 plug and an ethernet connector are the same part. The RJ45 name is by far the more commonly used of the two.
What is an etherCON connector?
etherCON is Neutrik's ruggedised ethernet connector, which houses an RJ45 connection inside a locking metal shell similar to an XLR. It protects the plug from damage and stops it being pulled out, which matters when digital audio is running over the cable at a live show.
Do RJ45 connectors work with both Cat5e and Cat6 cable?
Use a connector rated for your cable category. Cat6 cable uses slightly thicker conductors than Cat5e, so Cat6-rated plugs are sized to suit. A correctly matched connector keeps the cable performing to its rated speed.
