About Banjo Strings

Banjo strings come in light, medium-light, medium and heavy gauges, better known as 9s, 10s, 11s and 12s after the diameter of the thinnest string in the set (a 9 gauge set has a 0.009" high string). Lighter sets are easier on the fingers, while heavier gauges give more volume and drive, and are worth considering for plectrum banjos. Most standard 5 string sets also suit smaller tenor and 4 string banjos, simply leave out the second high string from the pack.

String material shapes tone and feel. Nickel-plated steel is bright with a smooth feel, phosphor bronze, found on the wound 4th string, is warmer, stainless steel is balanced and resists corrosion, and coated strings add a polymer layer for longer string life. Whether you play folk, bluegrass, blues or country, the right set will get the best out of your banjo. Restringing other instruments too? Banjo String FAQs

How many strings does a banjo have?

Most banjos have 5 strings, including the short drone string. Tenor and plectrum banjos have 4 strings, while 6 string banjos are tuned like a guitar. Most 5 string sets work on 4 string banjos if you leave out the second high string.

What gauge banjo strings should I choose?

Light 9s and 10s are easier to play and suit most 5 string banjos. Medium 11s and heavy 12s give more volume and projection, and heavier gauges are a good match for plectrum banjos.

What is the standard banjo tuning?

Open G (G D G B D) is the most common tuning for a 5 string banjo. Because the tuning puts different tension on each string, sticking with a matched set keeps tone and feel consistent across the neck.
