How many microphones do I need to mic a drum kit?
A 7-piece drum mic set is the standard for a full five-piece kit: typically one kick mic, four snare and tom mics, and a pair of overhead condensers. A 5-piece kit covers the kick, snare and toms, and suits live stages where the cymbals carry acoustically.
Do drum mic kits include cables and stands?
Most kits include mounting clips for the snare and tom mics, while XLR cables and stands are usually purchased separately. The iSK 7-piece set with cables and stage box is the exception, bundling everything needed to plug straight into a mixer.
Can I use a regular vocal microphone on drums?
You can, and many engineers use a dynamic vocal mic on the snare. Dedicated drum mics, however, are built to handle very high sound pressure levels, mount directly onto drum rims and are voiced for each drum, which is why a matched drum microphone set delivers more consistent results.
