Audio Adapters

Audio Adapters

Audio adapters are small plug converters that change one connection type to another, such as 3.5mm to 1/4" jack, XLR to RCA or RCA to 3.5mm, so an existing lead still fits.

Convert between XLR, 1/4" jack, 3.5mm and RCA connections with SWAMP audio adapters, the quick fix when the cable you have does not match the socket you need. Speakon adapters for speaker level signals are stocked too.

About Audio Adapters

Audio adapters convert one connection type to another, letting an existing lead do the job when the plug does not match the socket. Common conversions include 3.5mm to 1/4" jack for headphones and aux connections, XLR to RCA for linking pro and consumer gear, RCA to 3.5mm for plugging a phone or laptop into a hi-fi, and gender changers for joining two leads together.

The main SWAMP adapter range is built with 25AWG copper wire and designed for mic and line level signals, so it works with all XLR microphone cables, TRS cables and RCA leads. Speakon adapters built with 2.5mm2 conductors handle speaker level signals. If you find yourself reaching for the same adapter constantly, a dedicated lead is the tidier long-term fix: pick up a ready-made aux cable, see headphone cables for extension leads, or browse audio connectors to build your own.

Audio Adapter FAQs

Do audio adapters affect sound quality?

With no noise noticeable to the human ear, quality adapters are suitable for live performance and professional field work. In a studio recording it can be worth removing adapters from the chain where possible to maintain maximum signal integrity.

What adapter connects headphones to an audio interface?

Most audio interfaces and mixers use a 1/4" (6.35mm) headphone output, while many headphones are fitted with a 3.5mm plug. A 3.5mm to 1/4" jack adapter makes the connection, and many studio headphones include one screwed onto the plug.

Can I connect XLR to RCA with an adapter?

Yes, for line level signals an XLR to RCA adapter or cable works well, such as running a mixer output into a hi-fi amplifier. Keep in mind RCA is unbalanced, so keep the cable run short to avoid interference.
