About Speaker Connectors

Speaker connectors join a passive speaker to its power source, such as a power amplifier or powered mixing console, carrying high-current speaker level signal. What speaker connector types are used in pro audio?

Speakon is the standard on modern PA speakers and power amplifiers, while 1/4" jacks still appear on older and budget gear. Home hi-fi equipment uses binding posts and spring terminals instead, which accept bare wire, spades or banana plugs.

What is the difference between 2-pole, 4-pole and 8-pole Speakon connectors?

The pole count sets how many speaker signals the connector can carry: 2-pole carries one, 4-pole carries two, and 8-pole carries four. Multi-pole versions let one cable feed the separate horn and woofer sections of bi-amped and multi-way speakers, so a single lead carries every signal the box needs.

Why use Speakon connectors instead of 1/4" jacks for speakers?

Speakon connectors lock in place so a snagged cable cannot cut the show short, handle far higher current, and keep contacts enclosed so nothing shorts as you plug in. That combination is why they have replaced jacks on professional speaker connections.
