The Donner Essential L1 is a compact analog monophonic synthesizer that combines classic SH-101 style tone with modern performance features. Built around a 3340 VCO, 3109 low-pass filter and 662 VCA, it delivers punchy bass, expressive leads and rich sequences, while a powerful modulation section, sequencer and arpeggiator keep ideas flowing.

Legendary sound, made accessible
Inspired by iconic monophonic subtractive synths, the Essential L1 offers a streamlined signal path with plenty of character. The 3340 oscillator provides saw, pulse, triangle, sub-oscillator and noise sources that can be blended to taste, feeding a 4-pole 3109 low-pass filter that can be driven into warm self-oscillation. The 662 VCA rounds out the path with smooth, musical dynamics that sit perfectly in modern productions.

More modulation for deeper sound design
Two 4-stage ADSR envelopes handle filter and amplitude shaping, with velocity-sensitive response and the option to merge them for a vintage-style single envelope workflow. A synchronisable LFO offers triangle, square, random and noise waveforms, and can run into audio-rate territory for more aggressive FM-style tones and complex modulation. Enable DRONE mode on the VCA to create evolving ambient textures, or use the external input to process other instruments through the L1's analog filter and VCA.

Built-in sequencer and performance arpeggiator
The Essential L1 includes a 64-step sequencer with storage for up to 128 patterns and 32 songs, letting you build complete basslines and melodies without a DAW. Patterns can be entered via the KB-32M keyboard, other MIDI controllers or the front panel, then chained together in song mode. The onboard arpeggiator offers five modes and up to a three-octave range, with trigger editing for more complex and syncopated rhythmic ideas.

Snap2Connect S2C system with optional KB-32M keyboard
The Essential L1 is Donner's first synth to use the Snap2Connect (S2C) magnetic system. Dock the optional KB-32M keyboard to create a unified SH-101 style instrument, or detach it and run the L1 as a slim desktop module. As more Essential series modules arrive, the same KB-32M can move between them, giving you a flexible and modular performance setup.

Studio-friendly connectivity in a compact format
Despite its low-profile design, the Essential L1 offers a full set of connections for both hardware and computer-based rigs. MIDI I/O is available over 3.5 mm TRS and USB-C, while CV and gate outputs integrate with modular and semi-modular systems. Sync in and out keep external sequencers and drum machines locked, and the external audio input lets you route other gear through the filter and VCA. Headphone and main outputs, a hold pedal input and dedicated EXT IN make the L1 easy to drop into almost any setup.
