Electro-Voice PL37 Cardioid Condenser Overhead Microphone
The Electro-Voice PL37 is a tight-cardioid condenser microphone voiced for drum overheads, hi-hat and percussion, with a crisp top end and fast transient response that captures every stick and mallet attack. Its tight pattern rejects off-axis stage bleed for a cleaner drum image and more gain before feedback, and it doubles as an acoustic guitar and string instrument mic when a condenser is the right call. It runs on standard phantom power and comes with a stand adapter and a soft zippered gig bag.
Voiced for Cymbals and Percussion
The PL37's 50Hz-16kHz frequency response is shaped for overhead drum and percussion miking, so cymbal shimmer, hi-hat detail and the snap of every hit come through clearly in a live mix or a recording. For overheads, Electro-Voice recommends a pair set up with 3:1 spacing, angled slightly away from each other; on hi-hat, place it about 8-15cm (3-6") from the cymbal at a 45 degree angle to the edge. With 132dB maximum SPL it handles loud kits without strain.
Tight Cardioid Isolation
On a crowded stage the tight cardioid pattern keeps nearby instruments out of the capsule, giving you a clean drum sound and higher gain before feedback. Like most directional mics it has proximity effect: work it closer than about 15cm (6") for a fuller, more robust low end, or further back for a more natural, uncoloured sound.
Doubles on Acoustic Instruments
Although it is designed as an overhead and percussion mic, the PL37 also suits acoustic guitar and string instruments wherever a condenser is wanted. On acoustic guitar, aim it at the body end of the fingerboard from about 15-60cm (6-24"); for violin and other small string instruments, start about 30-90cm (1-3 ft) away, pointing at the strings and f-holes.
Built for Stage and Studio
A high-output, self-biased condenser element delivers a strong, low-noise signal and runs on 11-52V phantom power from your mixer, interface or input module. The die-cast zinc body has a textured black satin finish and Electro-Voice's Memraflex grille, and the included stand adapter (with a Euro-thread insert) and soft zippered gig bag make it ready to mount and carry.
