Does the job better than most acoustic pedals

By: Alan Smith on 27 September 2022
I'll admit that I'm primarily a bass player, but I occasionally need to switch to guitar (electric, or semi-acoustic), and I've long been looking for a pedal that will turn my Tele into a virtual acoustic. To be frank, I've never found a pedal that will do the job in a half-decent fashion. At various times, I've owned a Boss AC-3, a Mooer Acoustikar, and even a Mooer Tone Capture, but just couldn't get excited about any of them — mostly, they simply achieved what I could do myself with some judicious guitar knob twiddling and amp EQ'ing. And that brings me to this Hotone OMP-5, which is the first such pedal I'm reasonably happy with. Okay, it still doesn't sound exactly the same as my "real" acoustics, but for the first time I'm getting some acceptable simulation thereof (played through an acoustic amp). It takes some experimentation, selecting the right pick-up combinations, and the right preset on the OMP-5 (fortunately, there are 15 to choose from), and you can then tweak the EQ-ing etc. within those presets to get the sound you want. (You can also do that tweaking within the (free) downloadable Editor software if you prefer, but I was happy to just work with the pedal itself - the only downside is that the displayed text is really tiny.) The OMP-5 can also be used to enhance the sound of your acoustic guitars, although I haven't done much with that to date. Is it perfect? No, but it's quite a bit better than the aforementioned other-brand pedals, so this will be one that lives on my pedalboard. Even my wife says, "Yeah, that Tele sounds like an acoustic!".
